From January 2025, changes to EU regulations will require vehicles operating internationally to upgrade to Smart Tachograph Version 2 (V2). This update is designed to improve data accuracy, enhance safety standards, and ensure compliance across Europe. At Fleet Witness, we’re here to help you understand what’s changing and how to prepare.

What’s Changing?

The new regulations mean that many vehicles will need to retrofit their tachographs to the latest technology. This applies to trucks, buses, and certain commercial vehicles. Here’s what you need to know about the deadlines:

Key Deadlines

  1. By 31 December 2024
Vehicles with analogue or early digital tachographs (first registered before 14 June 2019) must upgrade to Smart Tachograph V2.

  2. By 18 August 2025
Vehicles already fitted with Smart Tachograph Version 1 (registered between 15 June 2019 and 20 August 2023) must be upgraded to Version 2.

  3. By 1 July 2026
Light commercial vehicles and vans weighing over 2.5 tonnes must have Smart Tachograph V2 installed. This expands the previous requirement, which applied only to vehicles over 3.5 tonnes.

Why This Matters

Avoid Heavy Penalties

Failure to comply with the new regulations could result in fines of up to €10,000 or more. Non-compliance also increases the risk of losing contracts, reputational damage, and liability issues.

Operational Benefits

Upgrading to Smart Tachograph V2 isn’t just about meeting legal requirements. It offers several advantages:

  • Lower maintenance costs.
  • Improved fleet efficiency.
  • Enhanced safety and reliability.
  • Protection of business relationships and contracts.

The Bigger Picture

It’s estimated that around 6 million vehicles in Europe will need to comply with these new requirements. As demand for Smart Tachograph V2 devices grows, businesses that plan ahead will be better positioned to secure equipment and installation services.

The expansion of regulations to include light commercial vehicles and vans over 2.5 tonnes signals a significant shift in compliance standards, and fleet operators must act promptly to avoid potential disruption.
